Easter Hazards For Your Pet

Easter is an exciting time for all the family. However, we must spare a thought for our furry family members. We at Sydney Animal Hospitals want to arm you with the knowledge of all the risks that certain seasonal treats pose to your pets this Easter.

Chocolate

Chocolate is toxic and potentially fatal to pets due to a chemical called Theobromine. The highest quantities are found in dark and cooking chocolate. Milk chocolate contains smaller amounts. The severity depends on the amount eaten and the weight of your pet.

Possible symptoms:

Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Restlessness
Increased thirst
Increased breathing and heart rate
Tremours/incoordination
Seizures

Hot Cross Buns

These delicious buns contain raisins, currants and sultanas which are all toxic to pets. Sometimes it can only take one of these tiny fruits to cause serious harm. Do not hesitate to contact your nearest Sydney Animal Hospitals if there is any doubt just one has been eaten.

Symptoms:

Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Increased thirst
Lethargy

The most concerning is the possibility of developing acute renal failure. This can develop quickly, within 24-48 hours.

Keep your pet safe by making sure they are out of paw’s reach. If you have children, be aware of what they bring home and educate them in the dangers so they don’t feed any as treats. Buy some easter treats that your pet can safely eat. Better yet try making some delicious “Easter Pupcakes” for your dog!
