Therapeutic laser therapy for pets involves the use of red and near-infrared wavelengths of light to stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal, through a process called photobiomodulation. This regenerative process alters the cellular and tissue physiology stimulating electrons and activating cells to promote tissue growth, proliferation and repair – helping damaged cells to recover from injury faster. The effects of this laser energy include improved healing time after wounds or surgery, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling.
Laser therapy is quickly becoming an important standard of care in both human and veterinary medicine. Considered a non-invasive treatment, laser therapy is pain-free, and we use it at each of our Sydney Animal Hospitals to reduce pain and inflammation, and to speed healing. Our veterinary team members administer laser therapy via a handpiece that emits the therapeutic infrared light to treat surface problems such as wounds, as well as deeper structures – penetrating through fur, skin, and fat if necessary to reach damaged tissue. Laser therapy can often reduce or replacing the need for pain medications.
Because laser therapy is pain-free, pets tolerate the treatment very well, and no clipping or shaving of the treatment area is required. When your pet arrives for laser therapy they will rest in a comfortable position and may be outfitted with laser-safe ‘doggles’ to protect their eyes. Pet owners will also receive laser-safe eyewear to wear during treatment if you remain with your pet during therapy.
Laser therapy treatments for pets take approximately five to ten minutes depending on the size of the treatment area and the condition being treated. During this treatment your pet will experience a soothing warmth that often relaxes patients, and sometimes makes them go to sleep! Some conditions require several treatment sessions for optimal outcomes, and our veterinarians will discuss the recommended treatment regime with you when your pet’s condition is evaluated.
Senior pets, and those pets who have recently had orthopaedic surgeries such as Tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) can especially benefit from laser therapy. Read more on laser therapy…….

KIDNEY DISEASE IN PETS
Kidney disease can affect both dogs and cats, causing a variety of symptoms that can affect their health and quality of life. The role of the kidneys is to filter the blood removing waste products and to maintain the balance of electrolytes in the blood to keep the body hydrated and healthy. The waste products they remove from the blood then leave the body as urine
