Understanding Lump Growth in Pets
Lumps and bumps are relatively common occurrences in pets, especially in dogs, and can arise for various reasons. These growths may be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous), and their removal may be necessary for both the pet’s health and comfort.
Examination and Diagnosis
When a lump or bump is found on a pet, our veterinarians will perform a thorough examination. This may include:
- Benign Growths: Growths such as lipomas (fatty tumours) or sebaceous cysts may not require immediate removal unless they cause discomfort or interfere with the pet’s mobility or normal functions.
- Malignant Growths: Cancerous lumps often necessitate prompt removal and may require additional treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Surgical Removal
The removal of lumps and bumps typically involves surgery, performed under general anaesthesia. Here’s what to expect
- Pre-Surgery: Blood tests to assess overall health and determine if intravenous fluids are needed during anaesthesia. A pre-med injection prepares your pet for the anaesthetic.
- During Surgery: The area around the tumour is clipped and sterilized. Our surgeons will excise the lump along with a margin of healthy tissue to ensure complete removal and reduce the risk of recurrence.
- Post-Surgery: Stitches or surgical staples close the incision site, and post-operative care instructions will be provided to ensure proper healing
Recovery and Follow-Up
After surgery, your pet will need a period of rest and close monitoring to ensure proper healing and to watch for any signs of infection or complications. Post-surgery care includes:

Pain Management and Antibiotics
Prescribed to aid in recovery.

Elizabethan Collar
To prevent your pet from licking or chewing at the incision site.

Histopathology
The excised growth is sent to a laboratory for examination to confirm the diagnosis and determine if further treatment is necessary.
Prevention and Monitoring
Regular check-ups with a veterinarian are essential for monitoring your pet’s overall health and detecting any new lumps or bumps early on. Preventative measures include:
Regular Grooming and Petting: Helps identify any unusual growths early.
Healthy Diet and Weight Maintenance: Can reduce the risk of certain types of growths

Importance of Early Detection and Treatment
Addressing any lumps or bumps found on your pet promptly is crucial. Early detection and treatment can significantly improve the prognosis and quality of life for your pet. If you notice any unusual lumps on your pet’s body, don’t hesitate to get them checked out by our experienced veterinarians.
